How to use this resource

How to use the lesson plans and about consumer terms and concepts.

These resources are designed with the idea that teachers will complete activities from each of the six lessons of this teaching and learning programme and then students will complete the online activities.

You can modify the activities in this resource to suit the needs of their students and the consumer community in which the students live. 

About the lesson plans

Lessons 1-6 developed in the teacher’s resource all use the following headings. 

 Purpose The aim of the lesson
Learning intentions  These are derived from the key understandings and concepts. They describe an overall intention for the lesson.
How will we will know we have done these things? These describe the activities students will participate in to meet the aim of the learning intention.
Back information for teachers Background information for teachers is provided at the beginning of each lesson, and within activities where this is required to assist students with completing the activity.
Preparation checklist A checklist for teachers to read and check before starting an activity or lesson. It indicates essential resources required to complete the activity.
Activities Work for students that includes class activities, online research activities, investigations in the community.
Masters of graphic organisers and information sheets are provided and are placed at the end of the activity in which they are used.

Consumer terms and concepts

This resource introduces some specialist words and terms associated with consumer education.

Teaching and literacy strategies that promote the effective introduction and use of new words, terms and concepts associated with consumer education have been used to promote comprehension and familiarity with these new terms. You may wish to develop further activities if your students are not confident with the consumer vocabulary that is used in the resource. The wordbank below is a summary of key consumer vocabulary used in the resource.
