Consumer information standards for water efficiency

These regulations require that water efficiency and consumption information must be provided to consumers for major water using products – washing machines, dishwashers, showers, toilets, urinals and taps. The efficiency rating is indicated in stars, more stars indicate better water efficiency. Water consumption is given in litres per minute, flush, or wash cycle depending on the product.

The Australian / New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 6400:2005 Water efficient products - Rating and labelling has been established as the basis for the regulations. It defines each product class and sets out the tests and rating criteria to determine a product’s water efficiency and consumption. The regulations set out variations to the standard.
