- Having strong and relevant consumer legislation is very important for both consumers and businesses.
- Consumer legislation is an important contributor to consumer confidence and successful consumer participation in the market place. Consumers transacting with confidence contribute to a productive and innovative economy.
- For businesses, effective consumer laws help to create a competitive business environment where reputable suppliers are protected from the inappropriate market conduct of competitors.
- 113 submissions have been received on the Consumer Law Reform discussion paper. These submissions are being considered by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs.
- It is hoped that decisions on the Consumer Law Reform will be taken in December 2010. This is in advance of the original timetable. This will mean legislation could be introduced to the House early next year.
- The fundamental consumer legislation - the Fair Trading Act, the Consumer Guarantees Act and the Weights and Measures Act - has stood the test of time well. However, there are various improvements and enhancements being considered. The primary objective of the Consumer Law Reform is:

- protects reputable suppliers and consumers from inappropriate market conduct;
