Petrol and Diesel Quality

Measurement

When New Zealand's oil industry was deregulated in 1988, regulations governing important properties of petrol and diesel were introduced to protect customers and the environment.

These regulations describe the most important performance properties of your fuel, such as the octane number.

They also specify limits for components that could harm you, your vehicle or the environment. These components include aromatics, lead and sulphur.

Fuel Quality Monitoring

Every month, samples of New Zealand's petrol are tested to ensure that they meet the prescribed standards.

How Good Is Your Fuel?

How can you be sure that your fuel is of an acceptable quality? This brochure explains the steps you can take.
