Magnetix Building Sets - Voluntary Recall

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs is working with the importer of Magnetix Building Sets to undertake a voluntary recall.

Magnetix are toy magnetic buildings sets sold throughout New Zealand at a variety of retail outlets.

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs and the Magnetix importer, Harvey Wholesale Ltd, have become aware of instances overseas in which some of the magnets used in the Magnetix toys have become loose and have dislodged.

If more than one magnet is swallowed, they may create a significant hazard to the digestive system. Inhalation of magnets could also be a significant hazard.

"Businesses have a responsibility to provide safe products and address issues of safety when they arise. I am pleased that the importer of the product has acted to alert consumers to the potential safety issue,” said Tony Lee, Manager, Measurement and Product Safety Service.

Magnetix sets contain small parts and should not be used by children under three (3) years of age.

Consumers are advised to:

  • inspect the magnets to see if they have become loose or dislodged
  • consider if this product is still age appropriate for their child, the manufacturer now advises that they should be used by children six (6) years of age and over
  • consider the way your child or children use the toy, especially if they put the toy in their mouth or use it in a way that would dislodge the magnets.

Consumers can contact the importer Harvey Wholesale Ltd on 0800 222219 or by email at  to discuss replacement or refund options.
