MCA File Using a third tier lender: experiences of NZ borrowers 2011
This report presents the findings of a research study on New Zealanders’ use of third tier lenders. Third tier lenders are defined by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs as finance companies (other than those who offer finance exclusively to businesses), pawn brokers and mobile lending trucks that provide consumer credit.

The research examines the size and characteristics of the third-tier lender market and their advertising in print media and on the Internet. The study builds on research commissioned by the Ministry in 2006 and investigates new trends and changes in the market.
MCA File Background Statistics for Considering Credit Issues 2011
This paper provides statistics that reflect the trends of the New Zealand credit market over the past few years. It gives a perspective on effects of the Global Financial Crisis on New Zealanders and how credit providers have changed in response. Examples include what institutions New Zealanders use to access non-housing loans, the types of debt that New Zealanders are in, trends in the use of credit cards and debit cards, and attitudes to debt.

Folder Fringe Lenders in New Zealand: Desk Research Project
This desk research project was completed on behalf of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs by Research New Zealand. It was conducted as part of the Ministry's monitoring and evaluation of the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act 2003 with the objective to gain a better understanding of the size and nature of the fringe lending market in New Zealand.

In 2006-2007, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs commissioned Auckland University's Centre for Pacific Studies to conduct qualitative research into Pacific consumers' behaviour and experience in the fringe lender market. The research involved in-depth interviews with key people from community organisations based in South Auckland and (focus group) interviews with Pacific consumers. The research was conducted in the context of the Ministry's monitoring and evaluation of the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act 2003.
File ANZ-Retirement Commission Financial Knowledge Survey
A Colmar Brunton survey tested New Zealanders' financial knowledge on a wide range of matters from saving, borrowing and managing debt through to sophisticated investment products. It also tested attitudes and behaviour in some areas such as managing personal financial affairs and investing in securities markets.
