Scamwatch has received numerous reports through the scamwatch.govt.nz reporting tool relating to text messaging scams.
There has been an almost 20 per cent increase in text message scams in the last two weeks. It would appear that scammers might also be taking advantage of the Rugby World Cup. Fortunately the reports that Scamwatch has received so far suggest that people are much less likely to fall for this type of scam now.
The text scams are mostly lottery scams and are reported as being sent by Blackberry, Apple iphone, Sony-Ericsson and Nokia amongst others. The most recently reported text scam also included wording about a rugby world cup promo.
Vodafone is warning its customers to ignore these texts and has said it was blocking numbers the texts came from.
However, Vodafone also said it has little power to stop the scam. You can find that article here.
