A new wave of fraud is targeting small businesses in Australia. Several businesses have unwittingly paid genuine invoices from suppliers straight into scammers’ bank accounts.
“We’re advising businesses to be on their guard as it’s usually only a question of time before scams circulating in Australia hit our shores,” says Jarrod Rendle, Information Campaigns Team Leader, Consumer Affairs.
If you receive a letter, email or phone call from a ‘supplier’, asking you to update their bank details, be wary. It may be a scam.
Phone your supplier to verify the request. Use a phone number from a trusted source, for example the Yellow or White Pages.
If you think your business may have been targeted by this scam, contact your bank and the police immediately.
